Our Take on Lighting a Space-The Basics

Lighting in a room impacts everything, from the color of the walls to the look of the furniture. So much gets said about the importance of natural light (and it is important) but there’s so much more to think about beyond what’s coming in your windows. So this week we’re chatting about our approach to lighting—we love a layered lighting effect. So here’s how we approach lighting any room in a design project.

Our spaces are unique because we mix a lot of styles together to create a unique look for our clients—and that goes hand in hand with lighting. In order to get the right feeling in a room it goes beyond bringing in decor and accent pieces to achieve a feeling, but it’s important to layer your lighting as well. So what does that mean? It’s easier than you think. It means you’re not relying on one light source to illuminate the room. So that means multiple sources at varying heights. It also helps to consider how you use the room as well, placing lights where they’re needed make a room feel well appointed and incredibly cozy. So consider these categories: overhead lighting, architectural lighting, floor or table lamps, and a sconce in every room.

Also, an added Moore House touch! We make sure everything is on a dimmer. It empowers you to create and control the mood depending on what you’ve got going on. It’s key to creating the right mood in a room.

Overhead Lighting: This is how we create and control the overall brightness of a room. We achieve the right balance through recessed lighting or ceiling mounted fixtures—whatever you end up using this type of lighting needs to be fluid throughout the space.

Architectural Lighting: We’ve been really into style of lighting to help us create areas or zones where we accent with a spot or architectural flood. We like to use them down a wall to create drama on paneling, as a spot light on a large range hood to see the gorgeous plaster work, or even in a corner where you know you’re going to have a piece of art or a sculpture. We don't use these everywhere, but on the main floor of your home they’re incredible!
