What to Do During Winter in Rhode Island

From out-of-state? We love showing off the beauty of Rhode Island to our cottage guests. While most people would consider Rhode Island a summer destination, it’s just as stunning in the winter and there’s still plenty to do to relax and unwind. Plus, there are perks to being here in the off season. The slower pace means less waiting in traffic and faster access to some of the best food.

Here’s how we stay busy in the winter!

Go beach combing at Fogland or South Shore Beach.
Bundle up because the beach is just as beautiful in the winter. A more sparse and muted color palette, it’s still fun to look for shells, explore tide pools, and watch the waves roll in. Plus, since it’s the off season, there’s no beach sticker required.

Check out Peckham’s Greenhouse.
Packed full of plenty of plants—including tropical varieties, it feels like an oasis on a cold day. Browse and buy a little green souvenir to bring home. Check out our other favorite spots to shop in Tiverton while you’re at it!

Get dinner or lunch at The Boat House or The Red Dory.
These spots have fresh seafood and waterfront views. If you can, try to grab a reservation for around sunset, it’s stunning. Also, don’t skimp and order some oysters, they taste just as good, if not better in the winter.

If you don’t want to go out, have a chef’s night in.
You can book this option at one of our cottages in advance to your stay. So lovely and indulgent, it’s the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion or even just a Saturday night on vacation. We’ll do all the work, just bring your appetite.

Bundle up and take a hike outside on one of the trails.
Bonus points if you bring drinks and snacks. While hot cocoa will do, we’re also partial to a little wine or a small batch cocktail. Don’t feel like doing the prep? Stop at Groundswell Cafe to grab some to-go treats. Here are some of our favorite trails:

Farmsite Simmons Pond Loop in Little Compton, RI

Hope’s Path in Little Compton, RI

Sachuest Point Wild Life Refuge in Middletown, RI

Take a tour of the mansions in Newport.
Again, way less crowded and still open, go to their website to get official hours, but this is a great way to spend an open afternoon. Grab lunch in downtown Newport once you’re done.

Reservation for an outdoor fire pit or a bubble.
Definitely picture worthy, drink and dine in your own sculptural igloo at Gurney’s, it’s like you’re dining al fresco but with a little less chill in the air. If you’re interested book this experience in advance because spots fill up very fast. You can also reserve an outdoor firepit at The Chanler where they serve everything from hot cocoa to espresso martinis.

Stop by the Tiverton Farmer’s Market.
Open on Tuesdays and sometimes Saturdays at The Sandywoods Venue, there’s a great selection of local produce and tasty treats. Plus it’s only a quick drive from many of our cottages.

Take a drive and see Ocean Drive or walk around at Fort Adams.
Beautiful any time of year, it’s always fun to look at the stunning homes and rocky coastline. Bring your leashed pup to burn off any extra energy.
