How to Blend Design Styles

Here at Moore House we’re always blending design trends together. It helps our interiors feel gathered, layered, and collected and feel less like a museum or period movie set. We want our spaces to look beautiful, but also be comfortable and functional for our busy lifestyles. Without comfort we have…really nothing useful.

We’re working on new design project—a craftsman style home that we’re balancing the history and beauty of its features while updating it to reflect our clients’ lifestyle. Think blending moody patterns in a modern yet Scandi vibe. Our interpretation of Scandinavian is cleaner, lighter, minimalist, and has a nod to color blocking. Craftsmans have more detail and paneling, are moodier, and often have tonal color palettes; yet they’re not as well thought out in their proportions. So they can feel a little overpowering.

The way we’re blending these styles together, is by bringing in Scandinavian elements of clean lines, modern, and minimalist influences, but blending that Craftsman detailing and moodiness. So the furniture pieces we’re sourcing marry these styles. We’ll also be bringing in a touch of art deco. Art deco usually has a blend of modernity and vintage shaping that will tie in the Craftsman style. Think crisp, clean bleached oak floors with some dark paneling and a bit of art deco curvature to the furniture, modern lighting, and artwork with a nod to cubism. It’s all about blending the lines and shapes to bring in the Craftsman style while simplifying the color palette to pull in the Scandi influence.
